This was written by a former editor for McSweeney’s, and it shows. It isn’t trying to bash you over the head with its jokes. It’s a dark, thoughtful look at celebrity that has very funny moments. It’s surprising this is his first book, as the action flows well. Reading it doesn’t feel like a chore. The characters, while many of them are clear archetypes, resonate.
One of the more enjoyable reads I’ve had recently. After I finished it, I read a piece the author wrote about the musical inspiration for the book that ended up shedding a lot of light onto what I’d read. Lots o’ spoilers, but something to bookmark if you ever read it.
