I visited Austin and did some stuff!
I saw so much of Austin and yet it wasn’t enough. Let’s get to the bullets, shall we?
- Whole Foods flagship was enormous and lived up to the hype. Bought some Texas wine for my kind hosts. Yeah, they make wine in Texas, apparently. Who knew!
- Somnio’s is a great restaurant. I forgot the name of it to everyone I talked to, so if you’re reading it, go here! The owner and staff are friendly, the place has a great vibe and the food/meat is organic, local and (most importantly) really tasty.
- Kerby Lane! Eggs! Vegan pancakes! Queso! Oh, the queso. If I ever have a kid, their middle name will be queso because it will make them impossible to dislike.
- Waterloo Records: fun fun fun. Got a Sigur Ros CD supercheap.
- tumblr meetup: woo! A full recap in an upcoming post.
- I stopped off at a coffeeshop in the middle of nowhere, which was next to a vinyl shop in the middle of nowhere. Found an amazing looking Elvis Costello 1988 Live in London bootleg. Couldn’t resist buying it. Now I’m getting a turntable just to play it.
- Zilker Park: a big open space that would’ve been more fun had Austin City Limits been there when I visited. Next time, Austin.
- Alamo Drafthouse: I admit being a little skeptical as to what was so special about a movie theater. And then I went. The place is indeed special. The people, food, movie selection and events they have there make it a one of a kind experience. I’m going back the next time I visit!
- Chuy’s: oh, so this is what Tex-Mex is supposed to taste like. Holy bejesus do they know what they’re doing.
- Rudy’s: see last sentence of last bullet and repeat. I love that they’re also a gas station. Deeeeeeeeeeelicious.
- Sonic: I had time to kill.
- HEB: see above. They had more meat refrigerators than I’ve ever seen in my life.
- Wedding at some place with statues and fire: I re-read some of my posts from the wedding and they sound kinda negative, but I actually had a great time! The Maker’s Mark made sure of it, but two of my friends got married in a lovely ceremony without a hitch and my other friend made a truly funny and moving speech. I also participated in some drunken dancing. Can’t beat it.
Austin is a great town with great people and greaty great great things to do and if it weren’t 107 and humid most days I would consider moving there. If you ever get the chance: run, don’t walk.
