Follow-up to “A note on how the rest of the country lives”…
To those who took umbrage with the fact that I was a little holier than thou with regards to New York being less wasteful than suburbia, you’re right!
Our mass transit alone makes NYC significantly less wasteful than other cities. Wikipedia’s never wrong and it told me that 50% of the air pollution is caused by cars. Reducing the amount of cars on the road helps with air pollution, oil consumption and probably stress. Pretty simple.
But the larger problem isn’t that simple, as toldorknown said. And I’m certainly not saying that the way I live my life is any less wasteful than the next guy living in Peoria, Illinois. But since the way we live isn’t currently sustainable, hopefully we’ll find another way to do things. You know, before peak oil comes.
And now back to your regularly scheduled dick jokes…
