This is a collection of stories Ronson wrote for newspapers and magazines. I’d read some of them previously, like the Kubrick one, and the recently published pieces on the wage gap and cruise ship deaths. And while they’re fascinating reads, they’re not really laced with the black humor that infects his best work. I can’t really blame him, some of the stories were awfully disturbing.
There’s also a possibility I don’t remember laughing while reading these stories because I was too busy being horrified. Now I’m regretting that this was the one time I forgot to set up a video camera in the corner of the room to capture myself reading in order to watch it later and confirm if I was enjoying myself while reading it. Next time I read a book, I resolve to livestream it.
If you read it, don’t make the mistake I did and read it before bed. Your dreams might not be nice.
